Halloween Safety Tips

If you decide to have your pet wear a costume, here are 3 helpful tips to keep in mind:

1) Your pet’s Halloween costume shouldn’t constrict his movement or hearing, or impede his ability to breathe, bark or meow. Be sure to try on costumes well in advance—and if your furry friend seems distressed, try switching to his birthday suit.

2) Examine your pet’s costume and make sure it doesn’t have any small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that he could choke on. Also, ill-fitting outfits can get caught on external objects or your pet, leading to injury.

3) Make sure your dog or cat has proper identification on underneath that cute costume. If for any reason your pet escapes and becomes lost during Halloween festivities, tags or a microchip can be a lifesaver.

AND - If your black cat is normally allowed outside, please keep him inside during Halloween.  Even if your cat is not black, it’s unsafe to let it outside with all the trick-or-treaters and the car traffic being at an all-time high. With all the ghastly costumes and commotion, your cat that is normally let outside during the day and returns at night, might be terrified to come back home.  If he does try and make his way, there is a greater chance of him being hit by a car.

BE SAFE! Share your costumed pet photos on our Facebook page!

Happy Halloween!

Paul Jolly Center for Pet Adoptions Opens in San Antonio

Paul Jolly Adoption CenterPaul Jolly, the Second Vice President and Treasurer of Actors and Others for Animals, retired earlier this week from his career with Petco and the Petco Foundation, at the same time as the Paul Jolly Center for Pet Adoptions opened in San Antonio, Texas.   Paul is an important member of the Actors and Others’ team, and we want to recognize Paul for all he has done to protect and care for animals as this Center opens.

It was in 1978 that Paul joined Petco (which was then known UPCO) in San Diego, Calif. At that time UPCO was still known as a California-based, mom-and-pop veterinary supply chain, catering to ranchers, kennels, catteries and grooming shops.

Paul went on to spend the next 35 years with Petco, the last 15 directing the Petco Foundation, which he helped establish.   Under his tutelage, more than $115 million was raised, more than 8,000 animal welfare organizations aided, and countless animals helped.

Nearly 25 years ago Paul joined Actors and Others, and continues to help us sustain and strengthen our commitment to caring for animals in need.

Last weekend the Paul Jolly Center for Pet Adoptions opened in San Antonio, Texas and will forever commemorate Paul’s impact on animals and animal welfare.   We want to add our thanks to Paul for all he has done for Actors and Others and animals everywhere and to congratulate him on this honor.

Funny "Best in Show" Commentary: See It Live!

Fred Willard and Jim Piddock will comment on celeb dogs, for charity.
By Alysia Gray Painter,

"Best in Show," the Christopher Guest mockumentary from 2000, has several memorable moments -- including the surreal moment when Christopher Guest himself keeps naming nuts (peanut, hazelnut) -- but every fan eventually cites the loopy and offbeat dog show commentary given by Fred Willard and Jim Piddock.

Remember how they sat, dressed to the nines, and observed the pups? You do, because Mr. Willard was hilarious and Mr. Piddock could not keep his co-host in check.

The duo will recreate their "Best in Show"-type personas for one special event on Saturday, September 28: The "Best in Show Pet Competition," a fundraiser presented by JoAnne Worley and Actors and Others for Animals...

Fred Willard and MittenzFred Willard Stars in Celebrity Dog and Cat Contest

In a takeoff on the movie ‘Best in Show,’ Hollywood fundraiser will benefit Actors and Others for Animals.

By Ernie Slone,

Actor and Emmy-nominated comic Fred Willard is going to the dogs, this time in the name of charity. Willard, whose film roles include the clueless dog-show color commentator Buck Laughlin in the movie "Best in Show," is reprising that role at a fund raiser on Sept. 28 for Actors and Others for Animals.

The Hollywood organization, which promotes humane causes, boasts celebrity animal advocate members, including Betty White, Lily Tomlin and Jo Anne Worley, the group’s current president.

I spoke to Willard about the upcoming fundraiser and about his love for animals.

Q. Your role in "Best in Show’’ permanently associated you with dog shows, but your real passion is for the humane treatment of all animals. Tell me about the upcoming fundraising show.
A. It’s going to be a lot of fun. Jim Piddock, who co-starred as the announcer with me in "Best in Show,’’ together we are going to be doing a live performance, looking at and judging videos of celebrities, who taped their dogs being cute, funny, and talented. And of course I will be commenting on each of them...

A Note from the Executive Director:

Early in the month, one of our board members sent me an email about a man calling himself “Jerry” selling fake spay/neuter certificates in San Bernardino which he was advertising on Craigslist for people to purchase for $20 and not have their pets sterilized. This bothered me so much that I called the San Bernardino Humane Society with whom we partner with for veterinary services as they have State Humane Officers. They too were interested in stopping such a practice. They sent one of their officers out and purchased a fake certificate. They were then able to get the Police Department involved and today they watched as he was handcuffed and taken to jail where he admitted his crime. They are charging him with a felony! Thank you to the San Bernardino Humane Society. By all of us working together we were able to step in and stop this man. If anyone has had a similar experience, please call them and let them know.
